For that image I basically used the tools explained in this DVD. It's hard to go over it all, but if you'd get hold of this DVD I'm sure you could make sense of it.
But I can give a general tip if you can't get hold of it. You basically paint your shadows first. Have everything dark, still having the color you want and so on, but really dark. Then in painter you duplicate the canvas and apply a soft light over it all with the glowbrush and then erase all the places where you didn't want it to be and the you color pick inside the light to redistribute it where it should be / detail it out. I guess you could try and do the same in Photoshop with a color dodge layer and a low opacity soft airbrush, but I haven't tried it.
